DERBY has the third highest number of adult learners in the East Midlands, according to new research.

Learndirect, which is a Government-backed organisation to help people get access to education, estimates that 1,439 Derby residents have enrolled on its courses in the past 12 months.

Combined with people who enrolled previously and are still studying, it works out at 140 people per square mile

The most popular course in the city is the theory of fork-lift-truck operation in a warehouse environment.

Leicester was in second place and Nottingham first.

The research marks the launch of the third annual Learndirect Achievement Awards, which celebrate those learners and businesses who are going that extra mile to develop their skills.

To nominate a learner, business or Learndirect centre for an award, visit the website at www.learndirect.co.uk/awards.
