HUNDREDS of homes were left without water after a mains pipe burst in Matlock.

About 1,600 properties were affected by the incident, which happened in Smedley Street, Matlock, yesterday at about 8.30am.

Technicians from water company Severn Trent were sent to fix the problem at about 9.45am and a three-way traffic light system set up while work was completed.

A spokesman for the firm said the water supply was returned to customers just after 1pm but pipes in nearby Woolley Road were also affected.

He said the road would remain closed until at least Friday, while repairs are carried out.
