141,000 of us binge-drink
HEALTH chiefs have released shocking figures which show that nearly a fifth of Derbyshire adults, 141,000 people, are classed as binge-drinkers.
Health bosses say the problem in Derby alone will cost them £55m on hospital admissions over the next five years if steps being taken do not work.

Binge-drinkers are people who drink double the daily recommended alcohol limit but are not dependent on alcohol. It includes not only drunken youths in pubs and clubs but those who regularly drink too much at home.
The daily limit for men is three to four units of alcohol and for women two to three units. A pint of strong lager or two small glasses of wine contain three units.
Experts say binge-drinking can lead to risks of developing serious health conditions, ranging from scarring of the liver to breast cancer.
Among measures to tackle the problem are plays warning children as young as 11 of the dangers and hard-hitting internet videos aimed at out-of-control revellers.
Richard Martin, in charge of Derby's alcohol strategy, said the drinking culture needed to change "to one that is safe and sensible".

“Pubs are places where we meet and socialise with our friends, this is where "Social drinking" takes place. I have never found it necessary to be drunk to enjoy myself, in fact if people are drunk they become antisocial and usually make complete fools of themselves.
Last year (New Years Eve) I was at a local and one chap kept telling me that he once was a child, I congratulated him and told him I was once one myself. Mistake! this drunken ass kept coming back to my group to tell us that he has grown up into a big stong adult (I could think of several different ways to describe him, but "Adult" was not one of them) and that he could take anyone on! We managed to sit him down where he finally drank himself into oblivion and argued with a painting of a man that was hanging on the bar's wall until the pub closed.
No doubt this person will brag to his mates that he "got bladdered", I'm sure a video of his actions would go down well at work with his mates?
Alcohol is cheaper from a supermarket than a pub, resulting in street drinking and drunk and disorderly conduct on our streets.
I will drink up to 3 pints of Old Peculiar, Newcastle Brown or a local brew this Christmas, though pub costs are so high now and recently being made redundant has brought an end to going out to the pub for this year.
Come Christmas I'll probably drink a brandy or two, several glasses of wine and a couple of pints of real ale. My brandy is over a year old and I have half a bottle left, should last untl Christmas 2010.
I asked my doctor if I'd be binge drinking if I drank the amount mentioned and he said no, but don't make a habit of it.
Have a good Christmas, if you drink don't drive is a simple rule.”

“I expect that the occasional over indulgence is not what is being referenced here. It is a regular excess that is not good for you. I imagine that the younger you are the more detrimental it is.
Either way excessive alcohol intake actually costs us. In tying up police resources and in preventable hospital admissions.
I do think pricing alcohol in shops by unit (e.g. 50p per unit) is a good idea. Currently some promotions are below cost so as to attract shoppers.”

“Once again the papers take a simple statistic and blow it up into a none story.
Think about it - 1/5 people in the county drink the eqivalent of 3/4 of wine every day - and they aren't dependent upon alcohol?
The reality is of course people drink to much on occasion - but scare tactic headlines don't address real issues or do anything other than sell a few newspapers.”

“This would be a concern if the person who created the recommended daily intake hadnt already admitted that he was pushed into it and it was a completely arbitary figure.”

“Whilst the government taxes booze to the hilt and makes money nothing will ever change. It all goes around in one big circle. Things will only get worse as social decay escallates year after year.”
