He said: "It is very early stages at the moment and I cannot say anything about the nature of the alleged assault.
"It would appear that the boy is going to be fine and there are no indications that his injuries are serious."
The incident unfolded yesterday afternoon when the emergency services were called.
By 5pm, two police cars, a riot van, and two ambulances were all parked outside the main entrance to the college.
Shortly afterwards, the ambulance drove slowly away from the scene, followed by a police squad car.
Earlier in the afternoon mechanics at a nearby garage said they heard an ambulance and at least two police cars go past with lights flashing and sirens blaring.
At 5.30pm, police scene-of-crime officers were beginning their investigations in a taped-off area of the underpass, about 30 feet from the school's back gate.
A spokesman for Landau Forte College said the matter was in the hands of the police.
He said: "We are aware that a serious incident has taken place outside of college at the end of the college day.
"This is now a police matter.
"We are unable to make further comment at this time."
Last night, the social network website Twitter was active with discussion about the alleged attack.
One user said she saw the victim at the scene.
She said: "He couldn't move (be)cause blood kept pouring out but I think he got in the ambulance okay."
Another Twitter user, Kelly Harland, said: "Feel so sorry for the boy who got stabbed.
"The world can be a horrible place sometimes."
A parent with two children at the school spoke to the Derby Telegraph last night.
She said: "My daughter rang me from school to tell me what had happened.
"I feel for the parents and hope that the boy is okay."
And Councillor Martin Repton, who represents Darley Ward, said: "My first thoughts are for the young victim and his family.
"I'm sure the police and the school want to quickly establish the circumstances behind this sad and shocking incident."
A police spokesman said detectives were looking for a gang of men who fled the scene of the attack.
He said: "Officers were called to a report of a stabbing at 4pm and found that a 15-year-old boy had been injured in an underpass off Phoenix Street. Officers are trying to trace a group of suspects who left the area soon after the alleged assault."
Anyone who has any information that would help the investigation should ring the police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
