£1bn power station scheme is backed by local committee
PLANS for a £1 billion power station have been given a seal of approval by councillors.
Energy company RWE Npower submitted plans to build the plant on the site of the former Willington Power Station.
While the final decision lies with the Secretary of State, South Derbyshire District Council's planning committee recommended last night that the Government approves the plans.
The project would create 2,000 jobs in the construction phase and up to 100 would be employed to run the plant, off Twyford Road.
To make way for the plant, the iconic cooling towers would be demolished.
The chairman of the committee, Councillor Martyn Ford, said: "People see the cooling towers as a landmark but the new power station will be much smaller and less intrusive."
The German-owned energy company submitted the planning application for the power station to the Government Department of Energy and Climate Change in December.
Plans for the scheme were revealed after permission for housing on the site was refused after a public inquiry.

So obviously not intrusive then - leave them there. They cheer me up coming along the A50 - means I'm 10 minutes from home, a coffee and a ciggy :)”
