IMPROVEMENT work costing £1m near Derby railway station starts on Monday.

Funded by the city council and East Midlands Development Agency, it will close Midland Place to traffic at the junction with Railway Terrace and Wellington Street and allow vehicles to use Park Street.

Roads will be resurfaced, landscaping carried out and new drainage and lighting will be installed. A toucan crossing in Railway Terrace will replace an existing crossing.

The project is expected to take 20 weeks.

Councillor Lucy Care, cabinet member for planning and transport, said: "For a long time it has not been clear to people arriving in Derby which way they should walk to the city centre."
