A LORRY driver has been fined £1,000 after breaking a weight restriction on an historic Derbyshire bridge.

Derbyshire County Council prosecuted Terry Jacobs, of Foredrift Close, Redditch, following the offence at Swarkestone Causeway.

The bridge is a scheduled ancient monument and is covered by a 7.5-tonne weight restriction imposed by Derbyshire County Council to protect it from damage.

Jacobs drove across the causeway in the direction of Derby on March 30 in a Volvo lorry weighing 18 tonnes.

“It's about time this bridge had a bypass built for vehicles and was turned into a foot & cycle path”

“I'm assuming the bus exemption is because by nature their journeys are well staggered whereas you could get a line of lorries crossing the bridge at the same time greatly increasing the load on it.”

“You will often see signs with weight limits for trucks and buses are exempt!
Like other people have commented if there is a weight limit, it should apply to all vehicles.”

“An ANPR camera there would prevent most overweight lorries going over and allow the rest - all of them - to be properly prosecuted. Even foreign ones would be identified and the driver could be banned from driving anything bigger than a Skoda here for life.”

“Perhaps he would claim his "satnav made him do it." Either way he should have lost his license. Damage done to that and other ancient bridges often cannot be properly repaired, just patched.”
