300 back petition against Alvaston takeaway
A PETITION against plans for an 18th takeaway in the heart of Alvaston has now been signed by more than 300 people.
David Brown, of Aston Investments, asked the city council for permission to create a hot food takeaway in the former HSBC Bank building in Shardlow Road.
But ward councillors say they are against the plan as they believe the fast-food industry holds a "monopoly" over the area. Councillor Linda Winter launched a petition against the takeaway plan, which she says has been signed by 300 people.
She said: "We've put the petition in shops and in the Blue Peter pub. I've also stood gathering signatures with the help of Alvaston Residents' Association."

So if it won't be open for long then, why worry?"
You may well be right, so why bother in the first place? Crazy!”

“Makes me chuckle when people assume these takeaways are unhealthy / health effects / nhs cost etc, only open at night etc
Whilst 17 takeaways is undeniably far to many in such a small catchment area they are not all unhealthy curry houses / chip shops / junk food
Two are bakers (- Greggs - Healthy / unhealthy I don't know and don't wish to debate) and at least another two are freshly made sandwich shops
Remember takeaway just means serves prepared food for consumption off the premises, it doesn't automatically mean pizza/chips etc”

“Re Dianae ""The future cost to the NHS of all these takeaways should be taken into account."
Just because there are 17 does not mean that they are used, hence my earlier comments about how many takeaway meals can be consumed.
Supply and demand do not work in Alvaston.
I take it you and yours never have a takeaway meal, ever then??”

“Sorry Fasty but there is a demand for takeaways all over Derby. Anyone with any business accumin would take one look at the amount of "competition" and think better of it.
Ultimately, no one can eat 18 takeaways every night!!
All the letting agent wants is his fee for letting a property on his books. He won't worry whether it succeeds or not nor what effect it has on the area. He will have had his cut.”

“I'm sure businessmen don't open these places willy-nilly, they must foresee a demand. It's not like taxpayer's money being spent on a velodrome/olympic pool/swing bridge that'll be used once in a blue moon.”

“Re: AlvastonW"Education and cooking in schools is required not fast food, how about the council via Derby college putting in a small catering school in the Harrington to educate Alvaston residents and teach them how to prepare quick healthy curries etc on a very limited budget/timescale.rently 17"
Do you really think that, because there are currently 17 Takeaways in the area that the people of Alvaston can't cook??
There are takeaways in every area of Derby, does this mean that people in these area's can't cook either?
IMHO this is down to poor planning by the Council, they just want ANYONE that will fill these empty properties instead of looking to fill them with more diverse range of shops.”

“Well done to all signing it but 300 letters to the council all requiring a response and requesting a right to speak in chambers would have made a bigger impact, Perhaps councillor Winter could mass produce one for people to add their address to and sign. Education and cooking in schools is required not fast food, how about the council via Derby college putting in a small catering school in the Harrington to educate Alvaston residents and teach them how to prepare quick healthy curries etc on a very limited budget/time scale. Derby college ditched its chefs/cooking courses they should bring it back and do budget cooking.”
