ORGANISERS of a campaign to save an Ilkeston GP surgery and walk-in centre said that hundreds of people had already signed an online petition calling for it to stay open.

Fourteen jobs will be lost when the Ilkeston Family Practice – based at the town's community hospital – closes in February.

It was opened in 2009 and has more than 1,500 registered patients but health trust NHS Derbyshire County said the decision to close it had been made by "mutual consent".

Trust managers said this was to reduce duplication of services – when the practice first opened, there were no extended hours available at GP surgeries.

But members of the Save Ilkeston GP campaign said the closure would have a "huge impact" on Ilkeston and surrounding areas.

A campaign spokeswoman said: "Our campaign has been welcomed by patients who are desperate to keep the facility open.

"In just one week, more than 800 people have joined the Facebook group and more than 400 local residents have signed the petition."
