“Maybe it is time for mobility scooter users to be confined to sidewalks for the sake of their safety. Some cities are already passing legislation for scooters to be banned from the streets, but this will also be a costly step as sidewalks MUST be maintained so that they are properly accessible.

“'Incidents like' what ianshelton? There is scant information as to what happened in any of the articles regarding what happened, so what changes are you linking to it?

That is why it is distasteful, merely because she was on a mobility scooter.”

“Lots to think about here. As I say I have full sympathy for the lady involved. Probably just went out as usual, bit of shopping etc. Very tragic. No doubt the forthcoming investigations will enlighten and go some way to resolve. But I don't think it's distasteful to hope for changes for the better on the back of incidents like this.
Cyclists - fair comment, another area ripe for review & change. Another sure fire vote winner though...”

“ianshelton, your argument applies equally to cyclists, who should also be tested, insured, identifiable, etc.”

“Yes SOME of the users of these scooters to use them as if their convenience is the only consideration they need and also use them at unacceptable speeds on pavements and in town BUT there is as of yet no indication that this is the case here.

To assume so, or to use this article to make an as yet irrelevant point, is in poor taste.”

“Agree. There are incicents like this occuring far too often, with scooter riders injuring themselves & others. If the person on the scooter is at fault they often ride off & there's no way to identify them, no insurance company details.... These things are certianly as hazardous as motor scooters. mopeds etc, yet you jump aboard & ride ... it's madness

I have great sympathy for the lady involved, she may have been totally blameless, but this whole issue needs further thought. However I sense there is no political will to do this, because it's a vote loser with the over 60s.”

“Isn't it high time that these people that drive these things have to take a test and training course. They should also have insurance.”
