A38 closed in both directions as River Dove bursts its banks
The A38 has been closed in both directions after the River Dove bursts its banks.
The road is closed between Toyota island near Derby and Weeford island in Lichfield because of flooding near Burton.
A diversion is in operation - Northbound A38 traffic is advised to use the A5 southbound and join the M42 northbound and follow the M42 and A42 to the M1 northbound before joining the A50 at M1 J24A and use the westbound A50 towards Derby to rejoin the A38 and vice versa.
A Highways Agency spokesman said: “The A38 is closed in both directions from the junction with the A50 in Derby to the junction with the A5 in Lichfield.

“The River Dove has burst its banks in Burton on Trent.
“Traffic is being diverted along the A50 westbound to the M1, from the M1 to the A42, then on to the M42 then on to the A5 where it can rejoin the A38 at Lichfield.
“We have not had many delays on this diversion route yet and we can’t yet say when the road will be reopened that will be a matter for the Environment Agency.”

“Utter chaos in Burton around 4pm, and there seemed to be knock-on delays on Swarkestone Bridge judging by the queue forming down Ticknall Hill when I approached an hour and a half later.
Didn't spot any Bobbies on point duty though ;-)”

“I have just driven along this road from caly mills at Burton to the A50 at the toyota island ( there were no road closed signs/bariers ), and there was not a drop of water on the road, although it crosses the river dove, the water levels appeared to be well below the road level.
Unless there are concerns about the structure of the brodge/culverts then i can not see a good reason why this section of busy road was closed between Burton ( clay mills ) and the A50
The issue here is that if roads are closed with no good reason, then people are far more likely to ignore road closures that are there for a good reason.”

“I guess it is a good thing that the arches under the canal viaduct were recently cleared out as many had been blocked.”

“The road should be closed to cars and if buses and trucks want to drive through they should be allowed.”
