A MENTION in Despatches is a leadership and bravery award for active operations in presence of the enemy.

Five Woofers have been awarded an MID – the fourth level for awards in the armed forces, behind the Victoria Cross, Conspicuous Gallantry Cross and Military Cross – for their actions in Afghanistan.

Each will all be awarded a silver leaf in recognition of their gallantry, which they will wear while on ceremonial duty.

Sgt Fitzgerald's citation reads: “Realising the balance was tipping towards the enemy, Sgt Fitzgerald seized the moment and stormed the enemy trench with grenades and rifle fire.

“A rocket-propelled grenade injured him and another soldier.

“He ignored his own injury and only agreed treatment once he had ensured his platoon was safe and his men had been treated.”
