Review: Adoration
By Neil White
IN a French class project, Canadian student Simon delivers a presentation about how his terrorist father had set his mother up to be an explosives mule.
The intention, says Simon (Devon Bostick), was to blow up a plane with many Jews on board. His delivery is so convincing that the class members believe him and their chatter spreads to passengers who would have been on the ill-fated jet.
In reality, Simon is an orphan who is looked after by his struggling uncle Tom (Scott Speedman).
As the controversy of the fiction of his class project engulfs Simon, so he begins to unravel the complexities of his past including how and why his parents died.
Adoration is a film of many parts. It explores, on different levels, the influences that gossip, hearsay and fixed opinions can have on life. It also makes an incisive attack on racial prejudice. It may even require a second viewing to see how many clues were given to its denouement.
