Advice about doorstep callers issued by police
POLICE are urging members of the public to make sure they check the identity of doorstep callers in a bid to reduce the risk of burglaries.
It comes after reports from people living in Amber Valley of salesmen calling at homes asking for or trying to sell goods without proper identification.
Anyone selling items door-to-door must have a pedlar's certificate, which carries a description of the seller and a photograph.
Community safety inspector Russ Dakin said: "We really want to remind residents of the importance of checking for identity when people come to the door.

"There have been times where residents have sadly become the victim of a burglary while being distracted by someone on the door step.
"Our advice to residents is that if you are not sure who is calling, then don't open the door.
"Always check the identity of callers or ask a trusted friend or neighbour to come over and check them out."
The pedlar's certificate is an official document issued by police that must be worn and shown to residents by the seller as soon as the door is opened.
Insp Dakin said people can be arrested or summoned to court for trading without a pedlar's certificate.
He added: "Genuine callers will understand and be prepared to wait while you make the necessary checks.
"If you have any doubts or if they are persistent, then contact the police, who will be able to verify their identity."
Other advice being offered to homeowners to try and reduce the risk of crime includes phoning the company any callers claim to be representing and checking their identity over the phone.
Windows and doors should also be kept secure and, if residents are not happy about answering the door, then they should refuse to do so or call a neighbour while they talk to the doorstep caller.
People should also never agree to anything on the spot or pay cash up front.
