AN alcoholic who stole from two shops, assaulted a police officer and threatened another PC has been jailed for nine months.

Daniel Magee was told by a judge he needed to take all the help he could get to sort out his drinking or he would end up killing himself.

Recorder Penelope Moreland said she would not give him a community order because in the past he had breached them.

But she said: "I'm delighted to hear there's fresh hope for you in support offered by your ex-partner and daughter."

Derby Crown Court heard that Magee's ex-partner, a community nurse, had agreed to help him tackle his alcohol addiction.

David Outterside said Magee, of Cobden Street, Long Eaton, was arrested on November 13 last year for stealing a four-pack of lager from a shop.

And on November 17, the 49-year-old was seen on CCTV stealing two jumpers from Burton Menswear in Long Eaton. The clothes, worth £84 in total, were later recovered in a pub nearby.

Later that day he was arrested in a pub in Long Eaton. On the way to the police station, he made threats to an officer.

Magee admitted two offences of shop theft, assaulting a police officer and being drunken and disorderly. He also pleaded guilty to threatening behaviour against a PC.
