'Amazing win' could spark Derbys in the second half of Twenty20 campaign
THE second half of Derbyshire's Twenty20 Cup campaign starts tonight and the demand is for the players to match the high standards they set in their last outing.
The Phantoms host the return match against Nottinghamshire at the County Ground (7pm) following their thrilling last-ball victory over the Outlaws at Trent Bridge on Monday.
Graham Wagg stole the show with the vital late blows to take the win but head of cricket John Morris was impressed by the quality of play throughout his side in the three-wicket success.
“It was an amazing win really,” he said.
“The amount of good cricket played in the 20 overs was impressive and the desire to be out there and take responsibility was everything I want to see. I'm sure Mick Newell would say the same about Notts as well.
“It was an important win for us and if you can get across the line in tight games like that, it means more to you than a more emphatic win like the one against Yorkshire.
“Chasing a total is not easy but the way we did it showed we are a team that wants to succeed and is capable of beating good teams.”
It was also an important victory with regard to Derbyshire's prospects of qualifying from a tightly-contested North Division, which saw Notts go top last night after a five-wicket win over Leicestershire.
Two wins and three defeats from five games is not the ideal position but no county has been able to break clear of the pack at this stage of the competition and the opportunity is still alive for the Phantoms to go through.
Three of their remaining games are at home and Morris is keen to see his team make up for a poor performance in their one match at the County Ground so far, the 10-wicket blow-out by Lancashire a week ago.
“Twenty20 produces tight matches where anything can happen and even though we've lost three so far, we've only been properly outplayed once and that was because we didn't play well against Lancashire,” he added.
“That was a disappointing night but this is our chance to show the Derby crowd that we can play good cricket.
“Notts will no doubt be smarting from the other night and be ready to go at us but we will be ready to match them.
“There are still five games of cricket left in this group and we feel we are capable of winning all five.”
Derbyshire are to admit accompanied juniors for free for their Twenty20 Cup match against Leicestershire at the County Ground on Sunday afternoon.
The game starts at 2.30pm and, to encourage a family atmosphere, each paying adult will be able to take up to two juniors into the ground without charge.
Anyone who has already bought a junior ticket for the match will be able to exchange it for a ticket to another fixture at the club shop.
