SHOPPERS' heads were turned in Derby on Saturday as dozens of protesters marched through the city centre.

Members of the Derby and District Group of Amnesty International dressed as condemned prisoners and held the demonstration to draw attention to alleged human rights abuse in China.

They were using the forthcoming Olympic Games, which begin in Beijing in two weeks' time, as an opportunity to make people aware of what they say is a harsh crackdown on Tibetan people asking for more independence within China.

Members of the group, who marched from the Guildhall to the Spot and back, were also drawing attention to their claim that, on average, 16 people are executed every day in China.

They also say that 64 crimes are currently punishable by death in China and that these offences are mainly non-violent and include corruption and criticism of the government.

Group chairman Jill Bryant said: “We were pleased at the interest that our march attracted.

“We gave out many leaflets and we hope that some people will find the time to make their own written protest to the Chinese Embassy before the Olympic Games begin.

“It is not right that China can deny basic human rights to thousands of its citizens.”
