ANIMAL rights activists opposing plans to build a giant pig farm near Foston protested against the plans in Derby yesterday.

Members of Derby Animal Rights Group also collected signatures for a petition against the proposed development from Midland Pig Producers.

The plans include using slurry from the farm, which could house up to 25,000 animals, to generate electricity for the National Grid.

Group member Roger Swaine was among the protesters.

He said: "The plans will put local farmers out of business. There are many ethical reasons why the plans should not go ahead, along with the welfare issues of the animals involved."

Midland Pig Producers previously applied for planning permission to South Derbyshire District Council and a public consultation drew more than 2,800 objections.

But Derbyshire County Council took over when it became clear the plans involved "substantial waste management" – part of the authority's remit.

A spokeswoman for Midland Pig Producers said animal welfare was its top priority.

She said: "These plans have been inspected by some of the most highly respected animal welfare groups who have not raised any objections to the application."
