BUILDING work has officially started on Derby's newest library, in Mackworth.

The first sod of earth was turned by Councillor Ray Baxter, councillor for Mackworth ward, yesterday.

The library is the second in Derby to be paid for with Big Lottery money. The first, Allenton Library, opened last month.

Mackworth's new library will be built in Prince Charles Avenue next to the Co-Op.

Derby Homes will have an office there and Derbyshire police are also interested in having a community police office in the building.

The library will have a community meeting and learning room which could be used for drop-in surgeries.

There will be six computers with free internet access. Internet taster sessions are planned.

Mackworth residents can have a say on library services by joining a panel.

Anyone interested should contact Dawn Gebski on Derby 641716, minicom Derby 380712.

Councillor Joe Naitta, cabinet member for leisure and culture, said: "I'd like as many people as possible to let us know what they want to see in Mackworth's new library."
