“Don't any of you whinge bags ever stop going on about the old bus station. It was a right mess and Not fit for purpose. It was cold, draughty, damp and wet, constantly inhabited by drunks etc. So its gone now, so move on!
As for drivers trying to get in carparks that are full, there are plenty of other carparks available, it just means you have to do a little walking. Walking by the way is acheived by putting one foot in front of the other with minimal effort. But I suppose this is too much to ask for and these columns will be filled once again with whinging none walking people.”

“A typical trip into town costs about £3 for parking, no matter how many people are in the car. On the bus, its £4 each return. So anyone with a car is going to use the car.
Another problem is that in the Cockpit carpark, cars leaving have to merge with cars entering before they can get out.”

“The new bus station's design was supposed to have kept cars and public transport vehicles apart, but it has ended up with both buses and cars sharing the same exit routes onto the Morledge and this is where the problems with the need to divert buses occurs.

@CoachOgre, yes the Art Deco bus station was on an international register of unique and important Art Deco buildings. It was the deliberate neglect by the Council that allowed it to become run down and derelict.

The current bus station is cold, overcrowded and unwelcoming. The rear doors are contantly left open by smokers going out for a fag whilst the smell of stale tobacco drifts into the waiting area, cold winds blow through the building and ice sometimes forms on the steel seats. The waiting areas are designed to hold about ten people standing, yet the queues sometimes grow to 80 or more waiting for a bus.

Now we have drunks hanging around the outside bays at night times. Plans were submitted for modernising the old bus station, but these plans involved more space for waiting pasengers, better entry and exit routes to avoid mixing cars with buses, and more importantly, no space for casinos, bars and dining halls. Now we have a facility that offers more to gamblers abd drinkers than it does to the travelling public.
Finally, they are due to spend several hundred thousand pounds to repair the road surface along the bus bays, which have worn out since the station opened two years ago.”

“And as for it becoming an attraction, you need to get out more if your idea of a fun day out is to go and visit an old draughty, tramp ridden pi$$ stinking bus station, or maybe you shouldn't get out at all.....”

    “Coach ogre
The design of the bus station, old or new, is not the issue if the buses can't get anywhere near the station due to traffic on surrounding roads”

“The original station design with a bit of thought and investment would still have worked better than this monstrosity as it catered for buses from all directions and allowed for flow and late arrivals coping with more buses per day than we have now. It would also have become an attraction. The current design failed in Nottingham and many other places not only in the UK but around the world The only reason buses can reverse is because the land is private, on public roads they need a banksman. This was not about providing Derby with a bus station fit for purpose and future-proof but about selling off public facilities to make short term gain with long term pain to fulfil a labour promise not to raise council tax. How much is it going to cost over 25 years for to lease back the bus station? Will we now see the current administration selling off historical buildings, artefacts and land to fulfil its pledges thus depriving future generations access to what previous citizens of Derby have paid for or donated as public amenities/property?”

“DET, you appear to have got the words shoppers mixed up with idiots in the headline.

These people are after the stuff that was marked down around a week ago, but has now been marked back up, but is still below the fictional RRP, and by and large even though it'll 'boost' GDP is mainly made beyond these shores.

    Wallies tbh.”

“I said before the Old bus station was closed that they could have had the new Bus Station built on Pride Park with a park + ride system which could have been complimented with a tram system into Derby. Thus making Derby a 75% traffic free centre. From a recent article regard's the new bus station an ex Arriva Driver helped in the design of the current Stock car station. It is not fit for purpose, and yes i am a bus driver that has to use this unworkable transport hub.”

“This is normal as people still find it more convenient and cheaper to use their cars. Arriva cannot guarantee any bus being on time a window of 8 minutes each time of advertised time, cold, wet and standing getting splashed, which would you choose expensive uncomfortably narrow seated buses that bounce you around, no room for shopping at your seat or door to door in a warm comfortably car and no lugging of shopping? No contest at sale times.”
