WORK by a renowned Derby artist has gone on show in Southampton City Art Gallery.

Six paintings by Paul Gregory, who lives in Spondon, will form part of the exhibition The Truth About Fairies – From A Midsummer's Night Dream to Lord of the Rings, which runs until September.

Mr Gregory has devoted more than 20 years creating pictures based on Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy.

He does not consider his interpretation to be definitive, rather "a serious attempt at an impossible task".

An exhibition spokesman said: "Since the 1970s the revival of interest in Victorian and Edwardian fairy painting and illustration has undoubtedly been a catalyst for contemporary artists such as Mr Gregory."
