WHEN Maggie Gorman retired from teaching last summer she made sure she left behind a couple of reminders of her time at school.

The first was the creation of a new independent living unit for partially-sighted and blind pupils at St Benedict Catholic School, for which she had raised funds for many years.

The other was to set up the annual independent living award, which this week was presented to partially-sightedVicki Doherty, a former pupil of Mrs Gorman.

Vicki, 16, was one of dozens of pupils who took part in the school's annual presentation evening at the Riverside Centre in Pride Park.

The event went ahead after a three-week delay because of the bad weather which ht the county in January.
