Award-winning restaurant Zest branded 'dirty' in council hygiene inspection
A RESTAURANT crowned the best in Derby has been rocked by a hygiene inspection that branded parts of its kitchen as "dirty".
Restaurant Zest, in George Street, off Friar Gate, was given a hygiene score of one out of five.
The rating came after an inspection of the premises only 11 days before it was crowned "Restaurant of the Year" at the 2012 Derby Food and Drink Awards.
The inspector's report outlines a number of failings.

Among them was the absence of soap and hand drier, an insufficiently cleaned probe thermometer, damaged walls and window, "dirty" door seals, flaking paint on to a work surface, grease "dripping" near a meat refrigerator, a "filthy" bottle of antibacterial cleaner and "very greasy" ventilation filters.
Meanwhile, "very few" foods were date labelled and the sous chef was unaware of shelf-life procedures.
The sous chef was also found to wear the same apron when preparing different foods, which can potentially lead to contamination being transferred.
The inspector, Elizabeth Blaney, said the floor exposed "bare concrete" and she gave the owners a legal notice ordering them to fix it.
In a letter to the owners, Ms Blaney said: "It was disappointing to find yet again the kitchen floor maintained in a poor condition.
"This has been raised at each visit to your premises by this department since November 2006."
Co-owner Hayley Baddiley said: "Obviously we are very disappointed with the score.
"The key issue raised by the council is the floor in the building which, whilst flagged in previous reports, has never been put to us as having any impact on our score before as it doesn't pose an issue with regards to food hygiene. Clearly the rules have now changed and, in response to their concerns, we are investing £6,000 in replacing the floor.
"We've addressed all of the issues they raised in the report in the spirit of fostering a positive working relationship with the council, but still refute the report and the methods they used on this particular occasion."
Elsewhere, a private nursing home that also received a one out of five hygiene score has assured residents and their families improvements have quickly been made.
Norman Hillier, manager of Langdale Height Nursing Home, in Burton Road, said: "We're fully co-operating with the helpful suggestions of the inspector and there is no need for residents to worry.
"It was due to a changeover of staff and them not being used to our cleaning routine.
"They have now undergone extended training. I'm 100% confident that we will score five in our next inspection."
Among the businesses that received top marks in its latest inspection was Metro Bar, in Albert Street.
Co-owner Therese Roberts said: "We worked very hard to gain our five stars."
