FORMER Derby County midfielder Giles Barnes appeared as a late substitute in the MLS Cup final at the weekend.

The 24-year-old came off the bench for Houston Dynamos with 19 minutes left of their 3-1 defeat by LA Galaxy, for whom David Beckham made his final appearance.

Houston had led 1-0 at half-time but Galaxy hit back in the second half with goals from Omar Gonzalez, Landon Donovan, a penalty, and former Tottenham Hotspur striker Robbie Keane, also a penalty.

Donovan now has five MLS Cup wins in his career while Beckham finishes his six-year stay in the United States with a second successive MLS crown.

“Agree totally with 'MISTAWOOD'..he was very talented and it was his attitude which let him down reading between the lines..he could have had a glittering career and gone on to be a big name in English football, but never seemed to have his feet on the ground and was a difficult player to manage as i remember..sad really.”

“Yes but he was still with us when the injury happened. If you remember we wanted him to end his career and take the insurance payment, but he wouldnt, only moving on after the injury. I wish him well he supplied the cross which got us promoted.”

“I think it was arrogance really John. Left the club wanting "to win things" he was perhaps right saying Derby lacked ambition but look where he is now.... he always struck me as a footballer in football to be "A Footballer" not to play the game, if that makes sense. Wanted all the trappings big paypacket, big car, big watch, he had the talent but then like Dyer he got injured but didn't have a change in mentality. Good luck to him MLS can work for some people, he may get a reality TV show out of it!”

“It is hard to think that he is only 24. It is injuries which have damaged his career. No other reason!”
