More than 50 job seekers marched through Normanton this afternoon to protest against rigorous rules barring many from claiming benefit.

The march, coordinated by JET and Derby Unemployed Claimants Group, went from JET in Normanton Road to the Job Centre Plus at the other end of Normanton.

It was to highlight the tasks which are barring many whose first language is not English from accessing jobs and benefits. It includes tasks which require Hugh computer literacy or English to complete applications and the fact claimants need to apply for dozens of jobs to retain their job seeker status when there are often fewer than required advertised.

“What you take out should be based on what you have put in anyway. Only assylum seekers should qualify for any benefits on arrival. We don't owe these scroungers anything and what makes them believe they are entitled to or deserve any of our docked wages.”

“I think alot of these people are 'benefits seekers' and thats why they come here.

Derby-born has a good point, we should adopt the same rules as Australia & New Zealand as like them we are in the enviable position of being an island.

And to answer his question - we can't because we are members of the EU”

“Theres no xenephobia in this thread, just the majority of posters seeing this for what it really is.

How would you like to work alongside people not speaking the language and have a serious accident? how would they summon help? dial 999 and not be able to communicate to get you immediate help from the emergency services.
Maybe you would like such people working on major projects as they did on the Kings Mill Hospital PFI project where they lost all the oxygen and medical air while all the operating theatres were working. In such instances the threat to life is very real and they were dismissed on H&S grounds, imagine the uproar if people had died.

Unfortunately the threat is very real and can have dire consequences.”

“So much xenophobia in these comments.

Seriously, the benefits paperwork can be hard enough with english as a first language, I've known people with english as their first language that had to ask for help with it.

What do all the commentators here have against printing off the odd translated form to make things easier for people to survive whilst they look for work?

JET is a fantastic organisation from everything I've heard, and I don't see why they'd be supporting something like this if there wasn't a legitimate need for something to be done. The point of the application requirements is perfectly valid, some people aren't qualified to apply for 10 vacancies a day, demanding people meet random plucked figure targets can harm their chances of finding work as much as it might help them.

The benefits/Jobseekers allowance system does need some work to make it better... why can't we start with something simple like making it easier for everyone to understand???”

“I think the important question we need to ask ourselves here, is that after criticising someone's grammar, did I then deliberately misspell a word, or was it an unfortunate and humiliating error on my part?

    Dificult to say.”

“It becomes even more interesting we see what has been released by t, B.liar's former speech writer. He claims it was part of a deliberate plan to bring in foreign workers to lower wages in the UK, and give the Labour Party a key hardcore of support.”

    "@BusinessOwner
I take it you see the irony in misspelling your comment!!!"

Not a misspelling, a typo as E is next to D on the keyboard. Size 10 fingers on a size 6 keyboard.
At least it's typed in English - which the subject of this article should be learning instead of parading through Normanton.”
