And, to say thank-you for the care he received, he has invited surgeon Sujeev Rajapakse - who operated on Dean's head injury - along with nurses from the ward Alison Reynolds and Tina Murphy to London this Saturday.

They will be VIP guests as they watch Dean perform with fellow former soap stars Claire Sweeney, Natalie Cassidy and Ricky Groves to song You Can't Stop The Beat from the musical Hairspray.

Mr Gaffney said: "It's the least that I can do. The producers of the show have been very generous and didn't hesitate in agreeing to help."

Ms Murphy said: "I'm really excited and can't believe I'm going to watch the live show. It's really nice for him to show his appreciation by donating these tickets and I am sure we will all have a great time."
