TWO of the candidates vying to be named the county's first Police and Crime Commissioner have been eliminated.

David Gale and Rod Hutton finished third and fourth after the first count at Alfreton Leisure Centre.

The rules of the election mean that Simon Spencer and Alan Charles will now go forward to a second count.

“Given that elected police commissioners have proved to be such a huge disaster in the US, what possessed them to think it would be any different over here? In many US cities the political pressures mean that Police focus on massaging statistics and maintaining a visible but pretty useless street presence at the expense of long term investigations and work which actually leads to the conviction of career criminals. Expect the same to follow here.

At the very least they should have tried harder to keep politics out of the job. All candidates should have been independents and the mention of party affiliations should not have been allowed on campaign material or on the ballot paper.”

“Sad that the only independant candidate has not won. Now we have a political police force for what it's worth. :-(”

“Another outstanding campaign attempt by David Gale. I do feel a bit sorry for Rod Hutton though as he has fallen victim to this supposed non-political election being nothing of the sort.
The Government should take this all on the chin and can the whole miserable affair based on the appallingly low turnout!”

“so with the independent candidate eliminated, it's confirmed that we'll have a political police commissioner - expect policing on the streets to suffer as a result.....”
