Badminton: Crushed Notts as Derbyshire win
DERBYSHIRE first team continued their impressive start to the Inter-County Championship season by crushing local rivals Nottinghamshire 3rds 15-0.
Having won their opening Division 2A match 10-5 against Cheshire 2nds, Derbyshire made it two out of two in emphatic style at Chilwell Olympia.
The visitors made three changes to their side.
Doubles pairing Lee Clapham and John Bishop were rested, so Dan Torry was drafted in after two impressive displays for the second team, along with Simon Shaw, recalled after an injury-plagued summer.
Meanwhile, Tracy Parker, one of Derbyshire's most capped players, made her first appearance of the season, replacing the injured Sarah Pulley, who is expected to be out until the new year with a suspected broken bone in her hand.
Against a relatively young and inexperienced Notts side, Derbyshire wasted no time in taking control, with Parker, Leah Kellogg and Kristian Roebuck all winning their singles matches inside half an hour.
Torry had a slightly tougher battle against Ian Stockford but came through 17-21, 21-8, 21-17 in the end.
Derbyshire showed their class in the doubles, with Shaw and man of the match Torry showing promising signs for the rest of the season, while Roebuck and James Boxall breezed to victory.
In the ladies doubles, the experience of Rachel Roebuck helped Kellogg record two wins to go with her singles success, with Rachael Gilchrist and Parker making short work of their opponents.
The mixed doubles followed a similar pattern as Derbyshire secured maximum points to go joint top, with a game in hand.
Derbyshire 3rds lead Division 5A after making it four wins out of four with a 12-3 success over Cumbria 2nds at Woodlands School.
Captain Paul Todd, Nick Tranter and Rachel Hickie had wins in the singles and the home side dominated the doubles.
Andy Petty and Richard Cronin maintained their 100% record for the season so far, while Matt Rowbottom and Robin Harris won both their matches as well.
Sisters Rachel and Janine Hickie won twice in the women's doubles before Derbyshire wrapped it up with a hat-trick of wins in the mixed doubles.
DONNA Kellogg and Anthony Clark claimed an excellent first round win in the China Open.
Kellogg, from Spondon, and Derby-born Clark began their mixed doubles campaign with a 21-16, 21-14 victory over home favourites and third seeds He Hanbin and Yu Yang – the pair who knocked them out of the 2008 Olympics.
In the second round, Kellogg and Clark will meet Chen Hong Ling and Chou Chia Chi from Taiwan.
