BATTERY acid has been spilt onto a stretch of the A38 after a lorry shed its load.

Around 40 used car batteries fell onto the northbound carriageway, between Kingsway Island and Markeaton Roundabout, at 3.40pm today.

Firefighters are working fast to stop the acid leaking into drains.

The road is partially blocked and motorists are being warned to approach with care.
