Derbyshire were put in to bat after losing the toss and made it to the 14th over before losing their first wicket, as Paul Borrington pushed forward and was caught behind by Ben Duckett off the bowling of Lee Daggett for seven to make it 34-1.
Wes Durston hit two sweet boundaries but was also caught behind for nine at 86-2 but Chesney Hughes looked in good touch to reach lunch on 20, with four fours including a wonderful cover drive and a well-timed cut through backward point.
