Blast from the past as Rockhouse comes alive with sound of music
NEW life is being breathed into an old city nightspot.
Four people have come together to make sure The Rockhouse, in Babington Lane, will once more throb to the sound of music from December 1.
The premises was last open as the Rockhouse from 2008 to 2009. Before that, it played host to dozens of groups and fans from 1984 to 1996 but then closed and reopened a couple of times as nightclub venues, Future Club and First Floor.
But DJ Mike Phillips, 53, his daughter Amber, 18, bar manager Ryan Smith, 21, and licensee Leon Kerry, 20, are hoping to make another go of the venue.

Ryan said: "We have set the date for opening, are hoping to have the licence sorted in a couple of weeks and we are all very excited. We aim to be open seven nights a week and to be able to offer live music, themed nights and acoustic events.
"We will see how it goes initially, see what people want and take it from there."
Ryan praised Mike as the one who put forward the idea of the resurrecting the venue.
He said: "Mike used to go there years ago and we all agreed Derby needs something like this because it lacks a 500-person venue."
The last time the venue closed in 2009, the recession was blamed for the downturn in trade. The final gig was The Brand New Heavies and the final event was the Heresy and Heelz burlesque cabaret show, both in November.
Ryan said: "We hope to have live music for the first night but are staying tight-lipped about who it might be."
The venue is on the first floor of the building, which is owned by Reliance Electrical, on the ground floor.
Store manager Rob Corby said: "The upstairs area is no use to us because we cannot use it for storage or warehousing, as there is no lift. So we were delighted to be approached by Mike and his friends with a view to reopening the club.
"I started working here in 1985 and the Rockhouse was in full swing then. We are in the process of drawing up the lease for the place and I hope they make a success of what was always a great place."
