PROTESTERS fighting to overturn a decision to deny Bombardier a vital contract will demonstrate at a rail conference attended by a transport minister.

Theresa Villiers is the keynote speaker at the Derby and Derbyshire Rail Forum’s annual conference at the Derby Conference Centre, in London Road, on Thursday, November 3.

But when she arrives she will be greeted outside by ranks of campaigners, protesting against the Government’s decision to award the £1.4 billion Thameslink contract to German manufacturer Siemens.

Meanwhile, new Transport Secretary Justine Greening – who has just taken over from Phillip Hammond – is facing calls from the RMT rail union to meet its officials and Bombardier workers.

Ministers are facing continuing pressure over the Department for Transport’s decision to select Siemens as the preferred bidder for the Thameslink deal, which has seen Bombardier axe 1,400 jobs at its Litchurch Lane plant and began a review of its UK operations.

The Villiers protest has been organised by the Bombardier Community Support Group.

The demonstration is planned to start at 9am, outside the Derby Conference Centre.

Joining Mrs Villiers as a speaker at the conference will be Civil Aviation Authority chairman Sir Roy McNulty, who recently carried out a Whitehall-commissioned review of rail industry costs.

Also on the bill will be David Higgins, chief executive of Network Rail.

Campaigner Bill Greenshields said all three needed to hear how people in Derby felt about the decision.

He said: “These are three people directly responsible for the problems we are facing – and they have the nerve to address a conference in Derby while Bombardier workers are thrown on the scrap heap.

“A website advertising the conference says we can look forward to a ‘lively and interesting conference and debate’. Let’s make sure they get it.”

The RMT said that, despite Government claims to the contrary, there was still time to change tack on the award of the Thameslink contract as it would not be signed off until next month. RMT general secretary Bob Crow said: “We are seeking an urgent meeting with Justine Greening.”

Meanwhile, speaking on last night’s BBC1 Inside Out programme, money experts claimed Derby’s economy would suffer a £150 million hit in 2012 as a “direct result” of the job losses already announced by Bombardier.

The documentary went on to say the figure could soar to £316 million if the Litchurch Lane plant were to close.

    “Ninecar is right,
I think that the government want to make our railways so expensive that no one will be able to afford to use them, then they can close them forcing yet more people into their cars.
I have travelled on one of these guard less trains; on the Windermere line; the service is so slow, because everyone getting on; has to obtain their tickets from the driver before the train can proceed.
The Nationalised railway was much better, when I first started working for BR in the 1960s we had special instructions to stop trains, at Great Longston to take a nurse to the Devonshire hospital at Buxton.
This went on for many years after Great Longston station had officially closed to passengers.”

“McNulty is just as bad for the railways in general than just Bombardier. He wants more stations to be unstaffed and therefore more unsafe for the lone traveller, More ticket vending machines instead of staff at stations and the removal of Guards on trains.
How many people go to a station and ask the ticket clerk for the cheapest ticket, and he will sell you the one you require. A ticket vending machine cant do that as it can sell you a ticket that might not be valid at that time of the day. Although the machine flags it up, most passengers dont appear to understand it. I f you are on a train and an incident happens, who do you contact if the guard isnt on the train, the driver is driving and therefore you could be faced with travelling in an enviroment you are not comfortable with, eg intimidating fans etc.
If any body wants to protest please do for the sake of Bombardier and all the passenger railways of the country.
I leave you with this thought, If all the private companies are making profits out of running the railway industry, and will do more with the predicted 8% fares hike, why didnt Mcnulty consider the renationalisation of the railways as the Government pay out to these companies even though they make a profit”

“Bombardier is not a struggling company, it probably just doesn't feel justified in setting up the centre of excellence here or channelling work here as the govt is so blatant in robbing them of work. Other govts give Bombardier a level playing field - even ones without any home jobs depending on themdoing stuff right.”

“All i can see are a few people jumping on a bandwagon trying to make a name for themselves, how many times do people have to be told the contract wont be changed. since coming to power this goverment have proved time and again they dont care aboutt his country or the population, they are getting rid of thousands of public sector jobs witht he boast they are encouraging growth in the privates sector, then award contracts to oversears companies, companies in this case with a dubious recent history, but who are supported by their own government. cameron and co multi millionaires are not affected, its been proved this week with Dr fox as long as they keep they corroupt life style, employing firends!!! to fly all over the world, wander round the MOD claim to be advisors through some dodgy financial dealing, they only care about themselves, any protests is unfortunatley a waste of time and money, thieves and liars the lot of them”

“i don't think they'll take the slightest bit of notice & i'll be amazed if T.Villiers actually turns up. (is she does she'll probably be ushered in the back door). However i do think it is well worth protesting if for no other reason than to show how disgusted people are with this pathetic decision. Good luck everybody”

“I wish the protesters all the luck in the world, but I fear the stubborn politicians will not be listening. They will not change their minds as they have to save face. However, come the next election they may wish they had have seen sense. And who knows, there may still be some ethnic minorities in the wood-pile!”

“does it really matter now? the jobs have gone now, if Bombardier needed this contract to stay running what happens when it is finished, clearly the company are struggling for work and all that awarding them the contract now will do is prolong an inevitable closer when the contract ends and cause tensions with Germany which Derby has a lot of econmic ties with through it's twinning.

althought its not what we want to hear, it's time the workers found new roles or moved away with the company. Derby is a dying market.”
