Derby County: Jewell urges Rams fans to be fair to Barnes

PAUL Jewell says it would be unfair to expect miracles from Giles Barnes following the Derby County youngster's return to first-team action.

Barnes came on as a substitute early in the second half of Monday's draw at Charlton Athletic after being out for more than nine months with a serious knee injury.

The attacking midfielder suffered the injury in February and underwent surgery in March.

He came through a recent private friendly against Leeds United and is slowly building his match fitness.

But Jewell is worried that too much could be expected from the 20-year-old so soon after his recovery and is keen to take any pressure off the player.

"I don't really want to rush him for fear of knocking him back," said the manager.

"We would like him to have a couple more games behind closed doors because he is obviously not match-fit. We would be delighted to have him back – but we want to have him back fit.

"We tend to put too much pressure on young players and I think that is what has happened with Giles. There seems to be an expectation that when he comes back in the team, he is single-handly going to take us to the top of the league. It is not fair on him."

Barnes played a key role in helping Derby win promotion two seasons ago.

He scored eight goals in 39 appearances in the Championship and set up Stephen Pearson's winner in the play-off final at Wembley.

The impact he made led to constant transfer talk linking him with moves to Newcastle United and West Ham.

"You have to be careful not to put too much pressure on him because I think there has been too much spoken about Giles, for his own good," said Jewell.

"He burst onto the scene, did well and was rumoured to be going to this club and that club. He is only a young man, he has not had a lot of football under his belt and has had some terrible injuries, so we don't want to put too much pressure on him.

"It is important that he finds his way and comes back fit and strong.

"But don't expect to much of him too soon."

“Chad I entirely agree with you! That must be a first. I do not mind you describing my posts as babbles although there is may be a certain amount of irony to tease out. Clearly you are at least reading them in part. Derby County is tearing my hair out and it is showing this morning. Over and out for a count of ten.”

“The referee in the dream sequence must have been the man that was refeering the Derby Forest game this season. Surely if I was the only Derby player in the Newcastle half I could not be offside when slotting the ball past Given?

Look I promise to behave from now on - and face up to reality. The trouble is the reality is as described by Martin.”

“I wont bother commenting on Barnes we all know hes about as half as good as he thinks he is What i can not believe is we are even thinking of signing Ellington permanently he is awful What we going to do about the right back position now really good management not to have a replacement without moving the back four around again to try and accomodate some one to fill in .I never envisaged in August we would be in this position this squad as relegation written all over it”

“Carsley was one of those deals Chad. From the bits an pieces I can pick up form Jewells interviews an dhints - Carsley had agreed to coem to Derby and, bar the ink on teh page, it was a done agreement ...before he changed his mind. Hvaing said that Carsley alone wouldnt be much cop. I think Jewell canbe a good manager but his ability isd simply hampered bya board who despite their loud voices and chest beating and, dare I say it, typical American attitude of being very vocal...have given absoloutely nothing to back up thier chest beating. Jewell was successful at Wigan because he had money thrown at him left right and centre.....thats how all succesful clubs are run today so really Jewell is a typical manager at a non-typical club.

But hes still making a hash of things”

“so with these comments are we expected to believe anything the clown has to say? were we not told that we were preparing for this league in march when we were confirmed as religated? were we not told that plenty of deals were in the pipeline before the end of last season for QUALITY players? were we not told that we would hit the ground running at the beginning of this season? the clown is a two bob bit manager who has panic signed and bin robbed anything for free and paid over the odds for cast off`s that no one else wanted, just wait for the pressure telling "we got to sell before we can buy" line, over sized squad of cant, wont and dont hack its, gross over sized wage bill with a high percentage not even at the club or anywhere near the starting line up, it makes a fitting headline today that more garbage is being shipped into derby.”

by Wilf - Given minus 19, Dreamland

    Friday, December 19 2008, 10:00AM

“Yesterday I posted what was meant to be a thoughtful and constructive piece in response to two DET articles. It took about half an hour of my time yet disappeared into the ether. A few minutes ago I posted a shorter piece - not wishing to risk an invesmentt of half an hour. That also has gone into the ether. This is my final try - possibly for ever- and will be brief. Perhaps Derby fans need to suspend reality because reality is not being too kind to us. My non published piece finished with an attempt at light humour that was based upon an actual dream that I had two days ago. I can only recall dreaming about Derby County twice in my entire life and they have both occured during the last week.

    THE DREAM
I was peeling potatoes for my mother when my stepfather suggested that I drop everything and go with him to see Derby at Newcastle. As we approached the ground I realised that I had the potato peeler in my pocket. A policeman was near the turnstiles. Do I tell him about the peeler or just walk through the turnstiles? I did not tell him. The first half was evenly matched with both sides missing one good chance each. HT 0-0. In the second half Derby scored with a great header from a left wing cross. I then noticed that I was playing centre forward for Derby. They must have put me on during the second half. Towards the end Newcastle were pushing up and the only players in the Newcastle half were Shay Given and myself. That cannot be right because considering the timeframe Given must have been minus 19. Any way someone punted the ball up to me and despite being forty yards offside I drilled it past him into the net. Given said to me 'what a waste of time that was' and I replied 'exactly'. Final score Newcastle 0 Derby 1.

I have seen Derby win 1-0 at Newcastle - Roy Macfarland scoring with a header about ten yards from me.

It will not have escaped a few of you that in my first dream Derby won 3-0 at Blackpool on a rain sodden night. Now with this 1-0 win at Newcastle Derby are top of the dream league.”

“Sorry Chad missed the last bit of you comment - I guess I must have assumed you were talking about Big Sam when you kept saying "Big Sam in", that soembody was already lined up and, the day Big Sam gets a job you say that the man that was line dup has now got a new job.

It was easy to put 2 and 2 together and come up with Big Sam as your phantom manager”

“Sorry Chad - ive never said Jewells signings were good - I was one of the people saying what a waste of time and energy buying players from the lower leagues were or strikers who have been very poor fopr years. I cant think of any of them I was excited about but I coudl be wrong. Green is the only one whos come close to proving me wrong and even at his best hes only been average. I suppose i had some expectations from Savage that even at his washed up stage he might be an average Championship player with bite...but hes even lost the ability to kick people and Villa looked good on paper but Jewell plays him so rarely that the poor guys confidence must be shot to pieces and he never gets time to do what he MIGHT beable to do”
