FOUR 16-year-old boys have been arrested after two men were hit with a metal bar and robbed in Ripley.

The first victim, a 24-year-old man, was walking in Peasehill, near Mill Hill School, at 10pm on Sunday when he was hit and kicked. He refused to hand over cash.

The next victim was attacked at 12.05am on Monday.

The 38-year-old was walking along Mill Hill Close when four youths approached and demanded that he hand over his belongings.

He was hit over the head with the bar and fell to the ground, where he was kicked. He suffered a suspected broken nose and bruising to the face.

Four teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of robbery and bailed.

Police are appealing for witnesses. Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0345 123 3333 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

“Why are these people allowed bail and what does 'bail' exactly anyway? I beleieve if there's a chance they'll do it while on bail they shouldn't be realeased and clearly this lot will do exactly the same the minute they leave the police station. Chop their hands off I say.”

“The problem with these mindlessly-violent thugs is that the current system neither deters nor reforms them. They despise the weakness of non-custodial sentences, like a suspended prison term or community service, yet in prison they would be respected or feared by other prisoners. They would come out with an even more arrogant and brutal attitude.

Criminals who use extreme violence, especially against the elderly or vulnerable, need to be shown that society will not tolerate their actions. It is time the birch and hard labour were re-introduced for very violent criminals of the kind mentioned in this news item.

Once they understand the suffering they have inflicted they can be considered for rehabilitation.”
