NETWORK Rail says that improvements may be made to Spondon's level crossing.

In 2010, there were more near-misses with trains at the crossing than anywhere else in the East Midlands.

Network Rail said 15 incidents took place at the Station Road crossing in 2010.

A spokesman for the firm said that a bridge could be built to replace the current system, in which pedestrians cross the tracks through an unlocked gate. But she said nothing had been decided.

Currently, the crossing has road barriers, along with flashing lights and a siren to warn of approaching trains.

She said: "Each crossing is regularly checked and monitored by our staff.

"We do not put locks on pedestrian wicket gates at crossings which are not manned or monitored by CCTV as this could potentially risk someone becoming trapped on the crossing.

"We have regular meetings with the council at a road-rail partnership and this crossing has been discussed. Options for further improvements are being discussed with local partners and will be taken to the Office of Rail Regulation in due course."

“may it would be better if they blanked it of for cars and put another slip road in down ranyesway so there would be only a foot bridge theres no harm making traffic one way round in and out for the businesses around there most folks use it as a short cut at peak times so sure that makes it unsafe ive seen with my own eyes cars go around the barriers when down mostly when one train as passed and then cut around them thinking they stuck or being a clever prat.”

“another poorly researched and written article
Did the reporter and the Network Rail represntative not know that there is indeed already a perfectly adequate footbrdidge on the site?
The problem at this site is not pedestrians but cars passing through as the barriers go down
I doubt very much a road bridge could be installed, there is as Wafty said, not space”

“perhaps the title could say 'foot bridge' ? - when I first read this headline, I was imagining a new road bridge fitting in the tiny space at this crossing - it would certainly gather crowds to watch the cars trying to get over it.....”

“But there is a bridge. I have been on it with my grandson to watch the trains.”
