It features solar panels, using natural daylight to light the building, as well as a roof covered with sedum, which acts as a natural drainage system.

The new library also has more computers, fully accessible toilets and moveable shelving, creating an easily-changeable room layout.

Chairman of Chaddesden Neighbourhood Board, Councillor Sara Bolton, said: "After lobbying for this new library for over 12 years, I am absolutely delighted that this brilliant community facility is opening its doors.

"The new library will give the people of Chaddesden a fantastic service, offering them access to community spaces, better internet access as well as the more traditional library services."

There will also be an official dedication ceremony to Phillip Whitehead, the late MP who represented Derby North for 13 years, later in the year.

Ms Bolton, said: "I know that he would be extremely proud of this facility as he was a great lover of books."

The old building was originally built in 1954 and work began in July last year to replace it.

The work has been completed on schedule despite the difficult weather over the winter months.

Councillor Martin Repton, cabinet member for leisure and culture, who will officially open the building, said: "This highly sustainable building, with its new and improved facilities, is a fantastic development.

"It is purpose-built and ideal for local people as it offers a wealth of integrated, high-quality services that they can be proud of.

"The new Chaddesden Library will be a beacon of excellence for everyone in Chaddesden to enjoy for years to come."

The building will be officially opened on Tuesday at 10.30am, with the library opening to the pubic from 11am.

The former library building will be demolished next month, with a new path to be installed when the weather improves.
