BURTON-based Superbike squad Airwaves Yamaha are poised for a return to the world stage.

The team, run by GSE Racing, have dominated the British Superbike scene this season.

And their two riders, BSB title leader Leon Camier and second-placed James Ellison, have been handed wild card entries for the Donington Park round of the World Superbike Championship later this month.

It means that British riders will be strongly represented at the showpiece event at the Derby track.

The addition of Camier and Ellison to the line-up brings the total of British riders in the senior class to seven.

They are headed by Stiggy Honda star Leon Haslam, from Smalley, who is currently sixth in the standings.

The others are Tommy Hill, Tom Sykes, Shane Byrne and Jonathan Rea, all former stars in British Superbikes.

GSE Racing, who recently moved their operation from Coventry to the Burton premises formerly occupied by Carl Fogarty's ill-fated Petronas WSB team, have a history of success in WSB on home Tarmac.

In 2000, they took victory as wild card entries at both Donington Park and Brands Hatch with rider Neil Hodgson.

Leading the British series by 38 points, Camier said: "Ever since the team told me we were going to be wild cards at Donington, I have been counting down the days.

"It is going to be really interesting to see how we perform against the World Superbike teams.

"We know the competition will be tough but we'll be working flat out to see a British team on the podium at our home round.

"It'll be a tough few weeks going straight from Snetterton to Donington Park and then to Knockhill, but I can't wait."

The Donington round of the WSB takes place on June 26-28, a week after the championship visits Misano in Italy.

Steve Tomes had to be content with two second places in his latest Moto450 outing at a rain-drenched Oulton Park.

The Burton racer had to revert to his number two machine after his first-choice bike suffered problems during practice.

He made changes for the opening race after qualifying sixth fastest – but still finished disappointed.

Tomes said: "I finished second overall but I was very disappointed not to be closer to the vastly experienced former British Champion Mike Edwards, who claimed both the overall and Moto 450 class victory.

"We made further alterations ahead of race two and again improved my lap times but, try as I might, I was still unable to get on terms with Edwards and had to be content with another runner-up finish."
