MICKLEOVER people collect the most garden waste in their brown bins, according to city council analysis.

A breakdown of the collection by weight shows that Mickleover, as a ward, accounts for nearly 9% of all the brown bin waste collected by the authority.

  1. Bin snooper

The Labour-led city council is proposing to introduce a £40 brown bin collection charge from 2014 and wants people to compost at home to save on collection costs.

That suggestion has been ridiculed by the Lib Dems and Tories. Mickleover is a Lib Dem ward.

Lib Dem group leader Hilary Jones, said: "Labour are doing what they do best, finding new things to tax, and we will not let this go by without challenge."

The Labour ward of Alvaston collects the next highest amount, with nearly 8%. Littleover and Darley account for 7.5% each, on average, while Conservative leafy suburb Allestree makes up 6.5%. Normanton had the lowest rate with just 3.5%.

“Incorrect information in the report above - Mickleover is not all Lib-Dem - there are 2 LD councillors (Hillary Jones and Fay Winter) but John Keith is Conservative

This information is given for factual accuracy only - the reality is that you can't tell the difference these days”

“I use my brown bin for pet bedding - woodshavings etc as well as the usual things.
I've yet to decide what to do if there is a charge for brown bin collection. I have no soil in my garden, so don't require compost and we usually take hedge cuttings to the tip.
I'm more likely to make a one off payment for an incinerator bin, for pet bedding and put food waste in the black bin.”

“I think I may scrap by brown bin if the charge comes in.

It would leave me with a problem, it is plastic but won't fit in my blue bin!”

    “Stupid idea.
By composting you effectively create extra soil. In 10 years time every house will have a great mound of soil with nowhere to put it.
Exactly what does this pathetic labour council use for brains?”

“Ill thought out strategy. Probably worked out on the back of a fag packet during lunch break.”

“It would be great to think the charge would lead to people dumping their brown bin to make space for a compost bin ... but much more likely is that black bins will take the garden and kitchen waste.
Or is Labour going to fine people who do that?”
