STREETS in Normanton targeted with a deep-clean operation are already returning to their litter-strewn state.

Residents in Woolrych Street and surrounding Young Street and Thorn Street said the rubbish began appearing almost immediately after the council's operation finished.

Normanton councillor Hardyal Dhindsa said this confirmed the value of the Derby Telegraph's Clean Up Our City campaign.

Mary Beatty, who lives in Young Street, said: "They got it really nicely cleaned up but it got dirty later on the same night. Kids walking down the street drop crisp packets."

Her daughter, Stacey, said: "We see a lot of syringes down here and we've seen them since the clean-up. I've got a one-year-old daughter who's just starting to walk so it is worrying."

Radka Pokorna, also of Young Street, said: "It only looked clean for a few days and soon it'll look as bad as it did before. Nothing has really changed. There's a lot of lazy people around here and there's litter on the pavements."

In October, bin lorries, road sweepers and drain cleaners descended on the streets to rid them of rubbish. Items taken away included mattresses, doors, bricks and household waste.

Gullies were also cleared of debris, pavements and roads were swept and bins cleaned of contaminated waste.

Normanton was chosen for the first of the Take Pride In Your Street events because a number of residents complained of problems with litter and fly-tipping.

Mr Dhindsa: "The council, in partnership with the Derby Telegraph and other agencies, is supporting the Clean Up Our City campaign. At the start of this clean-up campaign we had to be realistic and know that people would have to be motivated to maintain this revamped environment. We knew that it wouldn't happen overnight."

He has spoken to council officers about installing CCTV cameras to monitor fly tipping and littering.

He said: "I've asked officers how far we can go. We couldn't have them on every street corner but it may help us to maintain high standards."

Mr Dhindsa is expecting an update on the CCTV cameras at a neighbourhood forum meeting on Monday.

“Cllr Dhindsa - one of the Normanton forum newsletter told residents to WRONGLY throw ALL their waste into the black bin nd did not mention recycling. Can you excplain this and let us know what you are doing to recycle more, not just' throw everything into a blackbin bag.

“The best thing would be to turn Normanton into the Incinerator Plant and employ all the scroungers (sorry, residents) to work there. Two problems sorted!”

“Obviously Councillor Dhinsa does not read about budget cut proposals as reported in the Telegraph, no money for CCTV unless PRIVATE FUNDING can be found and he is LABOUR.”

“It's only since the ROMANIANS have been let in that the fly tipping has been a problem....FACT

As kdhindsa said, there alot of Normanton bashing going on. I was in Mickelover the other day and observed graffiti on walls, gangs of youths smashing up a bus stop, fireworks being let off in the street by some more chavvy looking youths.....chuck in a few immigrants and you have an area alot worse than normanton!!!”

“If people aren't going to keep their own houses clean then what makes people think they will keep the streets clean around Normanton? Home hygiene, and overall cleanliness should be a heavily enforced part of the tenancy agreements. Just take a look around the area. Walking around here is like an assault course. To add to the problem, young children aplenty around here, and they'll grow up thinking this sort of muck is normal. So good luck on changing their attitudes as they grow older. Things aren't going to improve without some sort of intervention.

My street has about 20 odd house on it, yet there is dog muck everywhere. No one on my street has a dog. Does anyone even get fined for dog litter these days?

There's a little bit of green just over the road and at the side of my house, and it's regularly used by fly tippers. Now the fly tipping problem started around about the same time as the council started to charge to take rubbish away. Not only that, made it irritating to collect the rubbish. With their weird four black bin liner rule.

Might add that part of collecting benefits should enforce regular cleaning of the area/street they live in or on, It's shouldn't be promoted as a punishment for being unemployed, but as a duty for the area/community they live in. Hey it might even help foster some sort of community spirit having a bunch of people work together for a common purpose. I'd sure get more out of that than some carnival or religious celebration every other month around here.

I'd consider myself quite a liberal person, but there has to be a line.”

“Charge every house in the area an extra £5 per week street cleaning tax then Councillor Bayliss might not need the rest of us to subsidise them by a brown bin tax. Better still just stop cleaning it up as they did in the city centre and spend the money saved on other parts of Derby. Rubbish does not appear by magic (only in Harry Potter movies), people know who it belongs to, by their silence they are condoning these actions and are as guilty as the ones doing the dumping just as they are responsible for allowing many other crimes to take place. If you want to improve where you live stand up, be pride and act.”
