That day, a 92-year-old man drove to the Post Office in Shakespeare Street, Sinfin, leaving his wife in the car while he went to post some letters.
He dropped the letters on the pavement and Smith helped him to pick them up. The two men then went inside the Post Office and the victim withdrew his pension money.

He and his wife returned home a short time later and heard the doorbell ring.
The man answered the door to Smith, who reminded him that he had helped him at the Post Office earlier and asked if he could borrow a pen and paper.
He let Smith inside, fetched him a pen and paper and Smith quickly left. The couple later realised the cash that had been withdrawn at the Post Office was missing from the house.
Smith, of Romany Lane, Kessingland, Lowestoft, was sentenced at Derby Crown Court on Monday, March 4.
