TWO men have been arrested on suspicion of arson after a car was set alight and rolled down a hill.

The incident happened at 2.35am yesterday in Burnside Drive, Spondon.

A police spokesman said the Renault Clio was taken from a driveway in the road.

Two men, aged 16 and 21, were arrested on suspicion of arson in connection with the incident.

The spokesman said: "Witnesses saw two youths going away from the car."

Paul Sharp, sub-officer at Nottingham Road fire station, said the blaze had started inside the Renault Clio's passenger compartment.

He said: "People in the area were out of their houses.

"It was obvious the car wasn't parked. It had been set alight, the handbrake released and it came to rest in front of a tree. It took five minutes to extinguish."

“I seen the burnt out car this morning at about 7:55 just round the bak end of my house. It was a big shock to see such a thing in such a nice area. It must have been hurtfull to the closer neighbours to where the blaze happened. I was not woken up by the car or firefighters, so they must have been awfully quiet whilst putting out the blaze. The area does however have a few people who i know of that at that thimecould have possibly caused this arson. I was very shocked indeed but also intreaged by such autrosity.”

“I seen the car this morning at 7:55am on my way to school. I looked to be a car i recognized from aroung the corner, but i am yet to be reassured of that. It is a wild thing to happen in that area as it is a family area of the town. An idea of who it could be pops into my head, but i can't blame without evidene. I was not woken up by the firefighters or blaze so they must have been awfully quiet. The blaze must have happened behind my house, i was shocked to see the wreck this morning!”
