Bywater's patience pays off in Jubilee Shield bid
PETE Bywater won the Jubilee Shield in the latest round of the Long Eaton Victoria Angling Society's 2011-12 championship.
Bywater was drawn at peg seven in the latest match. which was fished on the clover pool at Rycroft Fishery in Hemington.
He started on the pole but failed to get a response, switching to straight lead baited with corn.
After nearly an hour, he was about to change back to pole when his rod-tip pulled round, resulting in carp number one.
Five more followed in quick succession before his sport ended for the day.
However, his 10lb 12oz weight was just enough for top spot.
On the opposite side of the lake, Simon Harper (peg 20) fished pole long to his left margin for three carp and a few silvers for 10lb 6oz and second place, putting him well clear of John Adamson (peg two), whose single small carp, taken on bomb and corn, and lots of small roach, on long pole and maggot, totalled 7lb 14oz.
With only two matches remaining, the championship remains wide open.
Paul Richardson has jumped into first place with 206 points, leap-frogging Malc Munn, who has slipped to second with 203, a spot he shares with Adamson.
Meanwhile, Adamson had to be content with two third-placed finishes at Makins Fishery.
Adamson first tried his luck in the 14-peg open match on lake two.
He was drawn at peg B3, where he banked silver fish on maggot on the pole for a 15lb 12oz total.
Allan Neale took the glory, claiming his fifth successive win at the venue with a 29lb 4oz haul.
Drawn at peg A20, he caught a carp immediately after the start on bomb and bread, following this with two more on corn, the last breaking his rod but he still managed to land it.
Gary Coton was his closest rival at peg A15, with five carp for 19lb 8oz.
Adamson was in the top three again in the open match on the Thames section, where sport was still difficult after the ice had melted.
He used corn fished to the island at peg six to claim third with a 13lb 10oz net.
Top spot belonged to Phil Hull on peg nine, where he used bread and corn for a 16lb 6oz total.
