THE thinking behind the business was simple. John Webster knew that, as a service engineer, he could only carry out a few jobs per day but there was no limit on how many appliances he could sell.

Thus, back in 1967, Reliance Electrical was born.

John had come to Derby to work for Rolls-Royce after his National Service in the 1960s. He trained as a service engineer but soon switched to selling twin tubs. Apart from a big dip when Rolls-Royce went bust, Reliance Electrical grew during the 1970s and 1980s on the back of demand for televisions.

The business has always been based in Babington Lane, starting off at a small unit at the top. It settled at its current home in 1987.
