A CAMPAIGN has begun to stop thousands of homes being built around Mickleover, Littleover and Mackworth.

The houses could be built to meet Government targets for 36,000 extra homes by 2026 across Derby city, South Derbyshire district and Amber Valley borough council areas.

Sites in and around Mickleover, Littleover and Mackworth are among several revealed as part of the authorities' consultations into their development strategies for the next 15 to 20 years.

The Conservative parliamentary candidate for Derby North, Stephen Mold, has launched a campaign to raise awareness of the plans.

He said: "If thousands more homes were built near these areas, they would be swamped."

The consultation closes on March 31.

“Totalitarian thinking coming from the Reds of Labour Planning.
What we don't see is the break down of how these targets are arrived at. How many social housing units needed? How many private? Given that existing private housing stock is not selling in the absence of buyers and morgatgages, I worry that we shall see the proliferation of substandard high density developments and the problems that causes! Developers greedy for growth will hungrily offer cheap solutions to spending Government grants if the bulk of the NEED is social housing.
Why not do a District Six (Cape Town) redevelopment of housing areas like Normanton? Afterall most of that area is coming up to 140 years old and crumbling . Residents of Normanton could be offered newer more ecological and energy friendly homes nearer green countryside. Would that be nice for Normanton inner city dwellers? Slowly newer modern social housing can then be built back in Normanton. Simple!”
