Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, of Argentina, addressed St Peter's Square as the new Pope Francis I
CATHOLICS in Derby watched with interest as cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, of Argentina, was elected as the new Pope by cardinals at the Vatican on Wednesday night.
The 76-year-old Archbishop of Buenos Aires has chosen the name Pope Francis I.

He is the first pope to be chosen from outside Europe for more than a millennium.
White smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel chimney earlier in the evening to confirm a new successor had been chosen to replace Pope Benedict XVI.

The 115 cardinals had been in isolation since Tuesday, with four inconclusive votes held before the new Pope was elected.
Conclave was being held after Pope Benedict XVI resigned last month.
After being elected, Pope Francis I appeared on the balcony at St Peter's Basilica to address the eager crowds in St Peter's Square.
He thanked the thousands for their welcome and led them in a prayer for his predecessor.
Pope Francis I also spoke to the crowds of how the world should set off on a path of love.
He left the balcony to wild applause.
Among those watching on television was Father Tim O’Sullivan, Catholic priest at St Mary’s Church, Derby.
He said: "It was a surprise but I suppose we should be prepared.
"I thought it would have been an Italian this time as it has been 35 years since they had one.
"It’s very interesting that he is from Argentina, I think that is a big statement."

“I suppose one of his first visits , will be to the Falkland Islands, to bless them and wish them well after their recent vote / referendum and welcome them into his worldly flock.
But maybe home to Buenos Aries would be the more direct and obvious route , to visit his and our good friends in the South Atlantic , who don't need much incentive to get their passions up to fever pitch again. Time will tell , to see what subtle involvement takes place . There have been many instances where religion and politics have tried to work together , not necessarily for the better.”
