CARE, guidance and support for pupils are key strengths of a Derby primary school judged "satisfactory" by Government inspectors.

A team from the Office for Standards in Education visited Grampian Primary School and its newly-published report gives an "outstanding" grade for how safe pupils feel.

The inspectors noted that more than 80 parents who responded to a questionnaire said they were very appreciative of the care their children were given at the Sinfin school.

But despite these strengths, the inspectors said attainment by the age of 11 had not been high enough, although this was now rising in reading and maths in all age groups.

The Grampian Way school has been told it needs to raise attainment in writing, improve the effectiveness of leadership at all levels and also improve the learning experiences for the youngest children.

The inspectors were particularly concerned that boys did not progress as well as girls in the nursery and reception classes, partly because of a lack of a secure outdoor environment and were not active outside learning.

Head teacher Chris Perkins said: "Whilst the school was judged to be satisfactory, the report does not do justice to the superb staff team I have. I consider it a privilege to lead them.

"We are all thrilled that, once again, the parents have overwhelmingly positive views about the school and how much their children enjoy their education with us. As is always our way, we will reflect on the validity of the comments in the report and continue our efforts to improve the school further."

Claire Fitzpatrick, of Sinfin, whose children, Chloe, 10, Reece, nine, Shelby, nine, and Dylan, three, attend the school, said her children were making fantastic progress.

She said: "They all enjoy their time at school and feel respected and valued.

"The staff are friendly, approachable and are always willing to help with any issues regarding my children."

Fellow parent Steve Higgins, who has Cameron, 10, Jordan, eight and Lennon, five, at the school, said: "As you enter and leave the school, you are always welcomed and greeted with a smile by the staff. Stars are given for good behaviour and steps are taken if a child shows inappropriate behaviour towards others, and a child will receive a red or yellow card depending on the severity and frequency of it."

Elaine Clemo, who has Hannah, eight, at the school, said: "My daughter is really happy at school. The teachers make learning both interesting and fun.

"It is such a friendly school, it feels like an extended family and Hannah loves it."

“OfSTED are fast losing the little credibility they once had under the new inspection rules. Under these new OfSTED rules it hardly matters how good a school is or how well it serves the pupils and the community or even what progress the pupils make. The fact is that OfSTED will not rate Grampian any better than ¿satisfactory¿ unless its SATs results match those from schools serving more priviledged areas.

The governors, staff and pupils at Grampian have done well. It is a very good school and it is just a shame that OfSTED cannot recognise that fact.”
