Carroll calls for 'fresh start' as he prepares for a first taste of Forest rivalry
NEW boy Tom Carroll is hoping Derby County can make a "fresh start" against arch rivals Nottingham Forest this weekend.
Carroll made his Rams debut at Barnsley on Tuesday night following his loan move from Tottenham Hotspur.
The 19-year-old midfielder marked his first appearance with a goal deep into stoppage time but it proved to be only a consolation as Derby were beaten 3-2.
Nigel Clough's men, who found themselves three down after half an hour at Oakwell, are now looking to bounce back from their first League defeat of 2012 when Forest visit Pride Park Stadium on Sunday (12.15pm).
"We've got to put the Barnsley performance behind us and, hopefully, put things right on Sunday, against our big rivals," said Carroll.
"I've heard a lot about the rivalry – it's a massive game and we're looking forward to it.
"Sunday is a new game and a fresh start. And it's against our rivals, so the lads will all be up for it, no doubt."
After a frustrating opening 45 minutes against Barnsley, Carroll played his part in an improved second-half display, which he capped off by steering Jeff Hendrick's low centre into the bottom corner of the net from 12 yards in the 94th minute.
"I'm not normally known for my goalscoring but it was obviously nice to get one at Barnsley and, hopefully, I can add a few more during my time here," said the England Under-19 international.
"It would have been nice to have got a goal and come away with three points, or a point, but it wasn't to be.
"On a personal note, it was nice to score but it was disappointing the way we played in the first half and that's what cost us.
"Hopefully, the team will learn from that and it won't happen again.
"In the second half, the team came out and did a lot better. We got ourselves back into the game but after the first-half performance, it was too late."
Carroll, who spent a spell on loan at Leyton Orient last season, has made seven first-team appearances for Spurs this term – all of them coming in cup competitions.
He was brought straight into the Rams' starting line-up, in place of James Bailey, while Ryan Noble was handed a first start up front.
"The lads have helped me settle in well, so there were no excuses," Carroll added. "In the first half, we just weren't at it.
"Obviously, the manager was disappointed. He didn't have to tell us – we know we weren't good enough in the first half.
"On Sunday, we've got to aim to play like we did in the second half at Barnsley and push on from there."
