A DERBYSHIRE journalist's campaign to set up a register of bone marrow donors is to be funded in his memory by the Government.

An extra £165,000 is to be given to enable Adrian Sudbury's legacy – Register & Be A Lifesaver – to be used to educate young people about bone marrow donation via the Anthony Nolan Trust. Adrian, of Pinxton, died in August 2008 at the age of 27 following his own battle with leukaemia.

The Register & Be A Lifesav-er campaign was first trialled in South Yorkshire and Bristol to encourage 16-18-year-olds to sign up to become donors.

Mr Sudbury waged a campaign for better education about bone marrow donation, which led to him meeting Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The Huddersfield Daily Examiner reporter became ill in November 2006 and was diagnosed with two types of leukaemia. He received a bone marrow transplant and, although not successful, it gave him time with friends and family.
