THE chief executive of Derbyshire YMCA has spoken out against cuts to homelessness services proposed by Derby City Council in its next budget.

Gillian Sewell said: "The effects of such massive cuts would be catastrophic. We're working with other providers in the city through the Derby Hostel Liaison Group to make the case for continued funding. The chief executive of Homeless Link has acknowledged that funding cuts envisaged here are the highest yet proposed anywhere in the country."

The council proposes slashing its budget for "housing-related services", such as hostels, from £3.8 million this year to £1.8 million by 2014-15.

“This dreadful government will no doubt be saying "its not me guv" its up to the council to choose what to cut. Eric Pickles makes enormous cuts in the city budget and then throws his hands up in horror when local authorities are forced to reduce services.
The Con/Dem policy to enable the homeless and unemployed to help themselves is perfectly demonstated in Derby's YMCA. The YMCA was formed some years ago to do just what society demanded and has suceeeded. They provide a safe living and training environment for some of the most vulnerable young people in Derby. For many its the first real home and family they have ever had and to snatch this away is alarming and will force many on to the streets and into crime. It seems like they have a personal grudge against Derby with the lousy settlement with no account of the areas of substantial depravation in the city.
So come on Messrs Cameron, Clegg and Pickles stop wringing your hands and blaming everyone but yourselves for this disaster look in the mirror to see the nasty reason for this affair.”
