Chaddesden’s new state-of-the-art £1.2 million library is getting ready to welcome local people to enjoy the new facilities it has to offer.

The new "green" Chaddesden Library will be officially opened by Councillor Martin Repton, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture on Tuesday, March 12.

  1. Derby City Council

Situated in the corner of Chaddesden Park, the new library is an exemplar of low-carbon construction and technology.

The new library has more computers, community meeting rooms available for hire, fully accessible toilets with baby-changing facilities and a more flexible space with moveable shelving that can be used to host community activities such as quiz nights, craft groups and author events.

Mr Repton said: “This highly sustainable building, with its new and improved facilities, is a fantastic development. It is purpose-built and ideal for local people as it offers a wealth of integrated, high quality services that they can be proud of.

"It will bring a much improved service for many users including families with young children, local schools and older people and will help to strengthen community ties, supporting both learning and health and well-being. We are very pleased to be giving residents high-quality facilities and the new Chaddesden Library will be a beacon of excellence for everyone in Chaddesden to enjoy for years to come."

The old library building opened in September 1954; local residents have used the library since childhood and seen their children and grandchildren enjoy using it too but the building has been long overdue for replacement.

Chair of Chaddesden Neighbourhood Board, Councillor Sara Bolton, added: “After lobbying for this new library for over twelve years, I am absolutely delighted that this brilliant community facility is opening its doors."

Following a lengthy search for a suitable site, work on the new library began in summer last year. It has been completed on schedule despite difficult weather conditions this winter.

The opening ceremony will be attended by Chaddesden ward councillors and representatives from The Friends of Chaddesden Park Group, the bowls club, Chaddesden Park Allotment Association and Age UK.

Following the opening of the new library, the old building is scheduled for demolition during April. Work to extend the path from the cricket pavilion to Chaddesden Lane will begin as soon as ground conditions are suitable, and the contractors are due to be finished and off-site during May.
